Plant Woody vines reach 10–12′ (3–3.7 m) in height, and 3–5′ (91–152 cm) in spread. These evergreen vines reach 25′ (7.6 m) in length. The vine extends tendrils that encircle supports, then coils them like springs to achieve a more robust grasp.
Leaves Oblong, 2–6″ long ⨉ 1–2½″ wide (6–14 ⨉ 3–7 cm), nearly heart-shaped at the base, with doubly toothed margins. Leaves are smooth or sparingly velvety above. Stipules are narrowly linear. This species’ leaves resemble grape leaves, hence the name vitifolia. Dark green leaves have three lobes, and fuzzy undersides.
Flowers Solitary scarlet to deep red, stunning flowers are 3–4″ (7.6–10 cm) around. A sepal tube is short, cylindrical or bell-shaped, up to ¾″ (2 cm) long. It is purple above, and pink or white below. The ovary is yellowish-velvety. Flowers appear in July to September. Beautiful red fragrant flowers are 5–6″ (12–15 cm) in diameter, with 10 petals. (Okay, technically, there are five petals and five petal-like sepals.)
Fruit Orange to yellow passion fruits are round to oval, and 2–3″ (5–7.6 cm) in size. Seeds are obovate in shape. Egg-shaped, green with yellow or white spots, soft and juicy.
