Oncidium ‘Red Stars Rooster’

Oncidium clonal hybrid

This cross of Cochlioda × Odontoglossum × Oncidium was formerly called Wilsonara Red Stars ‘Red Rooster’. (Another source says this is a cross of Onc. Chanticleer × Onc. Shelley.) The Oncidium genus contains about 340 natural orchids, and has spawned innumerable beautiful hybrids popular with orchid enthusiasts.

Plants: Most oncidiums are epiphytes, growing on other plants in nature.

Leaves: Stiff, erect, solitary leaves are 8–12″ (20–30 cm) long.

Flowers: Each inflorescence contains about 60 fragrant deep orange-red flowers. Flowers are about 2″ (5 cm) around. Five dark red, somewhat recurved tepals are behind a prominent orange lip, or labellum, with four lobes. The labellum is about 1 ⨉ ¾″ (2.5 ⨉ 1.9 cm). Atop the labellum is an orange fringed structure called a callus. It is about ½ ⨉ ¼″ (1.3 cm ⨉ 6.3 mm) in size.

Fruits: Seeds.

Habitats: Natural orchids are found throughout tropical and subtropical Americas: the southern United States, Central America, the Caribbean, and South America.
