Chinese crabapple is a native of—wait for it—China.
Plants: Attractive and vigorous small trees are up to 26′ (8 m) in size. Bark is dark gray-brown, and flaking.
Leaves: Elliptic to ovate, and finely serrated. They are 1¾–4 ⨉ ⅞–1½″ (5–10 ⨉ 2.5–4 cm) in size, with a petiole ⅜–1″ (1–3 cm) long.
Flowers: Abundant, fragrant flowers make this tree an attractive landscape planting. Dark purple buds deepen to pink, then fade to white as the flowers open. Each corymb has four to six flowers. Each flower is 1¼–1½″ (3.5–4 cm) around.
Fruits: Greenish yellow fruits sometimes ripen to bright red, and are about ⅜″ (1 cm) in size. Some cultivated varieties have consistently red fruits.
Habitats: Sunny, open hillsides and valleys, at elevations below 1.8 mi (2.9 km).
