Calamagrostis × acutiflora ‘Avalanche’
Feather reed grass
Feather reed grass is a group of cultivated grasses valued as ornamental plants in landscape plantings. This is a cross of Calamagrostis arundinacea and C. epigejos. It is rarely found in nature.
Plants: This grass grows in clusters 1½–3′ (45–91 cm) high and ~1′ (30–36 cm) around. The foliage reaches about halfway up the cluster; the rest is feathery flowerheads on long stalks.
Leaves: Variegated (green, with a white stripe down the middle of each leaf), in dense, erect clumps of narrow, flattened leaves.
Flowers: Light green at first, becoming pink-purple. Flower stems reach up to 5′ (1.5 m). They appear from June to February, starting earlier than some other cultivars.
Fruits: Gold-colored seeds fade to tan.
